Summary

Mine has been a life of much shame。 I can’t even guess myself what it must be to live the life of a human being。
Portraying himself as a failure, the protagonist of Osamu Dazai’s No Longer Human narrates a seemingly normal life even while he feels himself incapable of understanding human beings。 His attempts to reconcile himself to the world around him begin in early childhood, continue through high school, where he becomes a “clown” to mask his alienation, and eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt as an adult。 Without sentimentality, he records the casual cruelties of life and its fleeting moments of human connection and tenderness。 Still one of the ten bestselling books in Japan, No Longer Human is an important and unforgettable modern classic: “The struggle of the individual to fit into a normalizing society remains just as relevant today as it was at the time of writing。” (The Japan Times

I…。 this is the book everyone’s been raving about / calling the darkest, most profound, most chilling representation of dehumanization and alienation from society? I read all 177 pages and found only a pathetic little misogynist rambling despondently about? Nothing in particular, really? I am truly perplexed as to what about this text I was supposed to find meaningful and incredibly disappointed。

Will need to do another read through later。 Very heartbreaking

'No Longer Human' is one of the most successful Japanese books of all time and one that has established itself deeply in the consciousness of Japanese society。 It has been adapted into manga, anime and film several time。 Written shortly before the author's suicide, No Longer Human is a semi-autobiographical depiction of a man's alienation from society and the downward spiral of his life。 Containing sexual assault, drug addiction, multiple suicide attempts and the whole thematic of a life perpetu 'No Longer Human' is one of the most successful Japanese books of all time and one that has established itself deeply in the consciousness of Japanese society。 It has been adapted into manga, anime and film several time。 Written shortly before the author's suicide, No Longer Human is a semi-autobiographical depiction of a man's alienation from society and the downward spiral of his life。 Containing sexual assault, drug addiction, multiple suicide attempts and the whole thematic of a life perpetually falling apart, it is perhaps one of the hardest literary pieces to read。 What is so scary about 'No Longer Human' is how it puts you in the headspace of someone who experiences alienation and loneliness as his eternal existence。 Body dysmorphia, depression, the constant feeling of playing a character, a "clown", as the main character puts it, in front of other people。 It is scary to say, but in those suicide attempts during the story, the reader almost sympathizes with the decision of the protagonist。 No Longer Human is an amazing and super well written depiction of depression。 But it does not offer any solutions。 Dazai and the protagonist Yozos existence are hell。 I think it is really interesting, that one of the only things that offers Yozo some sort of way to express how he truly feels inside is his art。 Dazai's art was his writing and this is testament。 This book is bleak and it could be absolutely detrimental to readers in a certain mental state。 But it holds value。 The themes in this book are issues that will follow humanity probably for eternity。 It is scary how much one relates to the protagonist。 If you think yourself strong enough to read, you should absolutely check it out。 No Longer Human is one of the most disturbing and accurate portrayals of the human condition。 。。。more

Really interesting parallels to my year of rest and relaxation, reading them back to back enhanced both of them。 Dark and bleak humor。 Written in 1958 and translated from Japanese, with themes that have timeless relevance。

aimless and lousy。 I did not just waste 2 hours of my day sifting through every single page packed with “I’m the victim” “I’m so alienated and lonely” this wasn’t tragic。 this was pathetic。 a semi autobiography? sure lets have it。 using every person at your disposal and discarding and abandoning them right after? fetishizing and dehumanizing the women who were just as broken if not in his own words often worse off than these men who drank themselves to death from beginning to end。 theres really aimless and lousy。 I did not just waste 2 hours of my day sifting through every single page packed with “I’m the victim” “I’m so alienated and lonely” this wasn’t tragic。 this was pathetic。 a semi autobiography? sure lets have it。 using every person at your disposal and discarding and abandoning them right after? fetishizing and dehumanizing the women who were just as broken if not in his own words often worse off than these men who drank themselves to death from beginning to end。 theres really no point in me writing this。 this was just miserable and self indulgent and not even at all well written。 oh society is so bad it expects me to get a job guess ill have to find some lonely and emotionally frail woman to latch onto and still have the nerve to complain。 “i acted like a clown” are you fucking serious get the fuck out of here this is the first time I’ve been disappointed by a piece of highly praised Japanese literature。 “its a jarring portrayal of depression” maybe。 but we have a lot of that and they’re not all as repetitive and tedious。 140 pages of unrelenting self pity。 lord in heaven 。。。more

This book was incredibly bleak, like the kind of grim feeling that settles in your bones and makes you feel icky。 It was good, and as someone interested in psychology it piqued my interest simply by psychoanalyzing the main character the whole time, but I definitely would not read it again。

this book was pretty depressing。 missing lots of trigger warnings。 however I feel a lot of what the author wrote in his journals is actually quite relatable。 Maybe not the extent of being consumed by unhappiness everyday, but for example when he talks about how everyone lies, but most of the lies do not hurt people。 Also I feel that his detachment from society as a whole was interesting- since he was a child that’s all he ever felt? are some people truly like this- is it inherent or generic? or this book was pretty depressing。 missing lots of trigger warnings。 however I feel a lot of what the author wrote in his journals is actually quite relatable。 Maybe not the extent of being consumed by unhappiness everyday, but for example when he talks about how everyone lies, but most of the lies do not hurt people。 Also I feel that his detachment from society as a whole was interesting- since he was a child that’s all he ever felt? are some people truly like this- is it inherent or generic? or are there events (the author doesn’t go into much detail) that shift a persons way of thinking。 Either way, this book was extremely thought provoking and more relatable than I thought it would be。 just know that there is literally no type of happiness in this book at all。 。。。more

Well that was a bummer。I have met people that have spiraled into a similar state as Yozo。 They become so disillusioned by society that they decide that life is no longer valuable。 They begin to kill themselves with distructive habits and quickly spirial out of control。 It is a sad thing to witness。

Bleak, honest, and painful to read despite being a relatively stable frame of mind (for my doing)。 Borrowed this from a friend with whom I am constantly making slightly too dark jokes, which allowed me to take a peak into their psyche, as well as mine simultaneously。

I don't get why people like reading books like this。 It's full of one sexist remark after another, self-pitying, self-grandizing, bedside journal drivel。 Yes, it's emotional, but like watching a train wreck with no elegant writing, or even fiction writing at all。 This makes me think of hallmark cards that make people smile, but instead its a spewing of journal writing (not fiction) that speaks to people's angst and frustration with the world。 If that is what people are looking for they should re I don't get why people like reading books like this。 It's full of one sexist remark after another, self-pitying, self-grandizing, bedside journal drivel。 Yes, it's emotional, but like watching a train wreck with no elegant writing, or even fiction writing at all。 This makes me think of hallmark cards that make people smile, but instead its a spewing of journal writing (not fiction) that speaks to people's angst and frustration with the world。 If that is what people are looking for they should read a real book like Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage, by Murakami, not this drivel。 。。。more
